Modern Woodmen of America was named in honor of the pioneering woodmen who cleared the forests to build homes and communities and provide security for their families. Its founder, Joseph Cullen Root, formed a society in 1883, harnessing the same spirit to clear away family financial difficulties. While its founding mission has remained unchanged, the financial products and fraternal services have changed to meet the needs of Modern Woodmen families. W. Kenny Massey
W. Kenny Massey is the president and CEO of Modern Woodmen of America and also serves on its board of directors. Massey is also chairman of the board of directors of Modern Woodmen Bank.
Massey began his career with Modern Woodmen of America in 1982. Massey has served the society as a financial representative, managing partner, regional director and director of agencies before being appointed to the role as president and CEO in 2005. Massey has been a member of the Modern Woodmen of America Board of Directors since 2002.
Massey graduated in 1982 from Mississippi State University with a business degree in insurance. He has achieved numerous professional designations and achievements throughout his career including his LLIF from Babson College in Boston, Mass., and NASD Securities 6 & 26 licenses.
Massey is currently serving on the International Board for LL Global, the nonprofit parent company of LIMRA and LOMA. He served as past president and board member for the Fraternal Field Managers’ Association and also served on the LIMRA Executive Development Committee.
Massey currently serves on the Board of the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce and is President of the Quad Cities Contributor's Council. He is a member of the QC Air Service and is also active in his church.
Denis P. Prior
Denis P. Prior is national secretary at Modern Woodmen of America. In this position, he has direct responsibility for 12 operational departments and provides administrative support for all other departments at Modern Woodmen's home office.
Prior began his career with Modern Woodmen in July 1971. He served in various positions in the Issue and Members’ Service departments before being named manager of Members’ Service in August 1980. He was named manager of the Issue department in 1982 and served in that position until 2003 when he was appointed assistant national secretary. In 2009, Prior was named national secretary.
Prior holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose University and has earned the Fellow, Life Management Institute and LIMRA Leadership Institute Fellowship designations. He is a member of the Life Office Management Association, the Davenport Soccer Association and Our Lady of Victory Parish, where he served as president of the parish council. He also serves on the board of the American Red Cross of the Quad Cities, LIMRA, the Scott Community College Accounting/Business Management Advisory Board and is a member of The Association for Work Process Improvement and the World Future Society.
Prior and his wife Linda have four sons. They live in Davenport, Iowa.
Jerry F. Harbaugh
Jerry F. Harbaugh serves on Modern Woodmen of America's Board of Directors and the Modern Woodmen Bank Board of Directors.
Mr. Harbaugh is a retired partner formerly in charge of financial institutions at McGladrey & Pullen, LLP in Davenport, Iowa. His public accounting career covered a span of 32 years. Prior to joining the Modern Woodmen Board of Directors, he was the partner responsible for the team conducting Modern Woodmen's annual audits for 12 years.
He earned a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University in 1964. He earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Certificate and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs.
Robert C. Pollex
Robert C. Pollex joined the Board of Directors of Modern Woodmen of America on February 1, 2005, and has served in the national office of Escort for the society since its 1994 National Convention.
Mr. Pollex was elected in 1985 to the bench as Juvenile and Probate Judge of the Wood County Court of Common Pleas, General Division, in Bowling Green, Ohio. Judge Pollex, in his 14 years in this position, handles adult felony criminal cases and major civil cases of all types in the top trial court level in the Ohio court system.
His undergraduate studies were at the University of Toledo with a concentration in physics and mathematics. He earned his law degree from the University Of Toledo College Of Law in 1973.
Darcy G. Callas
Darcy G. Callas is the general counsel for Modern Woodmen of America and is on its Board of Directors. She is also the general counsel for Modern Woodmen Bank.
Mrs. Callas began her Modern Woodmen of America Career in 1983 as assistant counsel and then became assistant general counsel in 1994. She became general counsel and a member of Modern Woodmen of America Board of Directors in 2006.
A graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law, Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Callas earned the Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) and the Associate, Life and Health Claims (ALHC) designations. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois.
William D. Keltner
William D. Keltner, Jackson, Tenn., began his Modern Woodmen career in 1984. He was named regional director in western Kentucky in 1989. He has served as director of Modern Woodmen’s western Tennessee and northern Mississippi region since 2003. He was appointed to Modern Woodmen’s Board of Directors in October 2009.
Keltner studied at the University of Tennessee and is a graduate of the Purdue University Professional Management Institute. He has earned his Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Leadership Fellow, Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow and Fraternal Insurance Counsellor designations.
His achievements at Modern Woodmen range from President’s Club, Managing Partner Inner Circle to Regional Director Inner Circle. His region is active fraternally and has won numerous awards.
He is the past president of the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors and a current board member. He is a member of the Exchange Club, General Agents and Managers Association and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
Keltner and his wife, Bonita, have two children.
David B. Emrick
David B. Emrick, Davenport, Iowa, is a retired office managing partner for Deloitte and Touche Accounting. He has served on Modern Woodmen’s Board of Directors since October 2009.
A graduate of Ball State University, Emrick earned his Certified Public Accountant certificate in 1973.
Emrick has served on the boards of the Putnam Museum and Genesis Health Services Foundation. He is a member of the college of business advisory council for St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa. He is the past president of the Illinois Society of Certified Public Accountants, Western Chapter. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He and his wife, Linda, have three children.
Larry L. Schreiber
As chief actuary, Larry Schreiber is responsible for supervising the pricing of Modern Woodmen’s life insurance and annuity products. He also oversees certification of the organization's financial soundness to various regulatory bodies.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Schreiber began his career with Modern Woodmen in 1984. Schreiber is Fellow in the Society of Actuaries. He has also earned the Fellow, Life Management Institute designation and is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
Schreiber is past president of the actuaries’ section of the American Fraternal Alliance and has received the Luther College Jacobson-Rugland award, which honors fraternal actuaries for contributions to the actuarial profession and support of the fraternal benefit system.
Schreiber has two grown children. He and his wife Judy live in Davenport, Iowa.
Gary L. Medd
Gary L. Medd, Davenport, Iowa, was appointed to Modern Woodmen's Board of Directors in October 2013. He retired in 2012 as vice president of Internal Audit for Deere & Company, where he was responsible for leading the worldwide audit function. Medd has 45 years of finance-related experience.
A graduate of Drake University and an MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.
Medd is a past Board Member of Two Rivers YMCA, Moline and past Alumni Trustee for Drake University Board of Trustees. He currently serves as Trustee for the Quad City Cultural Trust, Board Member for the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, and Vice President, Congregation Council at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport.
Medd and his wife, Jean, have two children.
